A Little Bape Story (Name, Logo, Marketing)

Bape a.k.a A Bathing Ape, is a Japanese clothing powerhouse founded by Nigo back in 1993. The clothing company specializes in streetwear, running fashion houses in Japan including Bape, Bape Store, Bape Exclusive store (located in Aoyama, Tokyo) and Foot Soldier. Nigo’s brilliance is not limited to streetwear but in business as well. He is born to be a talented artist as well as intelligent businessman recognized both in the fashion lines and business world. The ingenious ideas to nurture Bape label and the ganbaru (perseverance) have brought great success to him. Apart from streetwear, Nigo’s company also operates Bape Cuts hair salon, Bape Café and gallery, Bape Sounds records. You find Nigo’s footsteps and Bape stores everywhere. Besides Japan, there are also stores in Hong Kong, Taipei, New York, London and Los Angeles among other famous spots.

The name Bape (pronounced as Bay-Pee) is the short for Bathing Ape. Nigo got the inspiration for his brand name from the 1968 film Planet of the Apes. “A Bathing Ape” is the acronym for a Japanese saying “bathing in lukewarm water”. Having daily baths in water at temperatures above 40 degree Celsius is the culture for typical Japanese. Bathing in lukewarm water is an indulgence but also an ironical reference to the lackluster younger generation of Japanese living in the comfort zone of affluence. However, the major part of Bape’s target market is from this group.

The official logo of Bape is the Ape itself. Nigo started nurturing his label carefully by quoting and printing the sticky line “Ape Shall Never Kill Ape” from the film on the t-shirts and give them to Cornelius, a famous Japanese artist, to wear during his performance to increase the brand’s exposure. While the label reach wider audience, Nigo then started supplying Bape clothing in limited quantity to drive the fans crazy. Other than that, the success should also be attributed to the flashy design and original art printed on expensive material. Nigo and A Bathing Ape stepped onto the international stage in years when the infectious Bape virus spread from Japan to the rest of the world.

In recent years, the label has plenty of crossover projects wherein the original art such as Baby Milo Monkey, Ape, Fast Food, Bapesta and Camouflage are used alongside characters from popular media such as SpongeBob, Superman, Batman, Super Mario Brothers, Marvel characters and Hello Kitty. The collaboration also takes place between Bape and famous brands such as Fendi and Pepsi, as well as artists such as KAWS and Gary Panter.

3 Reasons Why I Love Bape

Needless to say, as a street fashion lover, I am one of the million fans of A Bathing Ape. Here are the three things, sane and absurd, that make me fall in love with this brand.

The simple-yet-mass-appealing flamboyant original art refresh one’s eyes. Putting on any Bape clothing kind of making me strutting my stuff anytime, anywhere. I am feeling good.

I especially love the Baby Milo monkey and the camouflage hoodies. There’s nothing in this world cuter than Baby Milo innocent face. It’s so sweet that it even makes me go against the world just to buy it home.

The flashy characters become even livelier when they are playing with other popular characters in the Bape’s ever-expanding cross-over projects. You find no reason to feel bored about this brand as it constantly delivers you new stuff that rejuvenate your sense from inside out.

When I was talking about how popular Abercrombie and Fitch is, I said even the four other brands under A&F company are gaining worldwide popularity. They are Abercrombie kids, Hollister Co., RUEHL No.925 and Gilly Hicks. Let us check out about the SoCal themed clothing brand Hollister Co. a.k.a HCO.

A Little Hollister Co. Story (Name, Logo, Marketing)

Hollister Co. takes its name from a city in San Benito County, California. As we all know it is an American lifestyle brand under Abercrombie and Fitch Co. which is inspired by the Southern California surfing lifestyle. The city is where the inspiration comes from, hence taking its name to reflect the nature of the brand is just a brilliant step in A&F ingenious marketing system. The success of Hollister Co. has then motivated the company to take Gilly Hicks, Sydney as the name of the latest Australian themed lingerie brand.

Besides, the concept of the first Hollister Co. store was formulated around a fictional background story created by Michael S Jeffries for HCO customers to feel a different atmosphere while shop in the store. Hollister was founded by J.M. Hollister in 1922 as a pacific merchant shop in SoCal according to the fictional storyline. Indeed, all of A&F brands are attached with a fictional background which includes RUEHL No.925 and Gilly Hicks. The outcome of the fictional background is the rapid success of Hollister which even eclipses that of the parent Abercrombie and Fitch company.

Another brilliant marketing move that put HCO onto international stage in few short years is the implementation of “walking self-marketing”, wherein customers are the free advertising agents to promote Hollister clothing. How so? The vast majority of their merchandise are printed with its flying seagull logo, large embroidery or screenprint of the brand’s name, initials, fictional date of establishment(1922). To catch the pace of successful grayscale marketing images used by Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister Co. uses modified sepia toned images that look somewhat faded. The resulted vintage feel has further fortified the company’s claim on Hollister Co. as “pacific merchants” established in 1922, as well as the lifestyle promoted by the brand.

3 Reasons Why I Love Hollister Co.

I am indeed a die-heart fan of Hollister Co. who wears its product from head to toe. Hey, not up to toe because I wear Hollister cap, logo tees, hoody, short pants, but Nike shoes! May be the company should come out with a new sneaker line inspired by Japan called Tokyo or Kyoto?

The first thing I love about Hollister Co. is because of the vintage clothing feel which is simply rocks! It is said that fashion repeats itself after decades and that’s true as now I am being able to travel through time all the way back to 1922, thanks to Mike’s fictional story.

I am born to be a traveler and Southern California has been one of my dream destinations. Though I have not been able to step into that land yet but wearing this SoCal inspired lifestyle clothing does give me a kick, like drinking Coca-Cola when you’re super duper thirsty.

Though the price is not dirt cheap, it’s affordable and reasonable considering that the clothing is made of high-grade materials. I especially love Hollister Co. destroyed jeans which give the best vintage feel that tops other brands.

When you are talking about top 10 worldwide apparel brands, most probably you would get a list with big names like Nike, Zara, H&M, Ralph Lauren and Abercrombie and Fitch. Yes! I am assuring you that it is one of the most recognized clothing brands in this world! Even the 4 other brands under the umbrella of the company are globally recognized. They are Abercrombie kids, Hollister Co., RUEHL No.925 and Gilly Hicks. What a celebrity family in fashion retail industry huh?

A Little Abercrombie and Fitch Story (Name, Logo, Slogan)

Who invented Abercrombie and Fitch? In 1892, David Abercrombie founded Abercrombie Co. which was joined by Ezra Fitch in 1900 to officially become Abercrombie & Fitch Co. as we see today. Thus, the name is not part of the many genius marketing schemes run by Michael S Jeffries when his company The Limited acquired A&F. He repositioned the company as an inspirational youth apparel retailer that appeals to the dynamic youngsters all over the world. Though the advertising and other programs incur controversy at times, the CEO’s brilliance has pulled off the “Casual Luxury” lifestyle brand and carried the name Abercrombie and Fitch all the way to the international stage.

The company is well-known for the series of sensual photographs with a beach, architectural, or mountainous setting in grayscale. That tells why Abercrombie and Fitch has an official logo of a gray moose (above logo is shown as there is no high resolution gray moose logo found in the internet). The logo has been heavily printed on A&F products including cap, fleece, logo t-shirts, underwear and others to further promote it.

Abercrombie and Fitch uses its trademark slogan Casual Luxury to deliver a sticky message to its audiences. The slogan appeal to the fans and potential customers as it tells that the company provides the finest cashmere, pima cottons and highest quality leather to produce the casual and body conscious clothing. Also, customers just need to spend a little to be able to purchase the most exclusive denim produced by the best machinery. All in all, the slogan has brought a great success to the brand in the sense that a large portion of fashion lovers in the market love but could not afford luxury brands. They resort to this casual luxury which sells high quality products, markets through professional advertising that features sexy Abercrombie and Fitch models, and above all, tagged with affordable price.

3 Reasons Why I Love Abercrombie and Fitch

The three distinct reasons I am so into this brand are:

Casual luxury. I am a fan of Louis Vuitton and Gucci too. But an LV bag or Gucci tote equals to a couple of logo t-shirts, a fleece, a denim and a cap by A&F. A full set of outfit to hang out with friends! That’s why I love the slogan and how the brand has realized that.

Sexy models. You are reading this probably because you are a fan of this brand, otherwise the business competitor. Whoever you are, you can’t deny the fact that the brand has millions of followers because of its success advertising through hot Abercrombie and Fitch models(male and female models are as sexy!), and I am one of the millions fans.

Elegant design. Of course I am not someone so superficial who follows the trend blindly. I am more of a rational brand lover who emphasizes on product quality, comfort, and design as well. The graphic design, the cutting as well as the final touch to the products suit my taste so well.

Abercrombie and Fitch Signature Products

Coca Cola Logo

You have read about the king of the apparel brands, Nike, in my previous contribution. Now let’s me proudly introduce the beverage king, Coca-Cola. It used to be the world’s no.1 brand and has been staying comfortably in the top 10 since then. So who invented Coca-Cola? It’s funny to learn that Coca-Cola was first invented as patent medicine which the inventor, John S. Pemberton, claimed could cure morphine addiction, headache and impotence. The recipe was then bought out by Asa Griggs Candler, who was known as one of the brightest business minds of the century. His ingenious marketing tactics has evolved Coca-Cola Company into a powerhouse that has been dominating the global soft-drink market since 20th century.

A little Coca-Cola Story ( Logo, Bottle & Slogan )

The name of Coca-Cola was extracted from the names coca ( cocaine ) and Kola Nuts ( caffeine ), which are the two main ingredients in its formula. So if you are a Pepsi lover and do not want to call the rival’s name directly, you might be happy to call it cocaine-caffeine. There is not much thing to elaborate on its name because it is directly derived from its recipe. Thus, we will have a more detailed talk on its logo design and the sticky slogans that give the company its global status and reputation today.

Like the soft drink itself, Coca-Cola logo is indisputably one of the world’s most recognized icon. It was first designed by the company’s bookkeeper, Frank Robinson in 1885. He first came up with the name and was then inspired by it to create the logo’s unique cursive script. He also thought that the two Cs would give good visual impact and thus look well in advertising. The typeface used was known as Spencerian script, the dominant form used in formal handwriting in the States during 19th century.

The simple but unique color scheme of red and white in Coca-Cola logo was used to appeal young minds, complementary to the “contour bottle” design which symbolized the ‘youthful exuberance of America’. The “contour bottle” a.k.a “hobble skirt” bottle was the creative invention by designer Earl R. Dean back in 1915 when the Coca-Cola Company wanted a totally distinctive bottle which is typically Coca-Cola. It must be easily recognized that even a person could felt it in the dark and could tell at a glance what it was even if broken. Gosh! The CEO was so fuzzy and of high demand. But you know what, if it was not because of that insistence, the designer would not have come out with a superstar bottle which its fame could emulate those of the celebrities in Hollywood.

What about the ever-changing slogans which has been quintessential in the marketing system of Coca-Cola Company? Below is the list of Coca-Cola slogan since its establishment in 1886 up to now.

There is only one Olympic gold medal to be given to one of the many contestants above. It should be given to the ones in 1969 and 1971, which are “It’s The Real Thing” and “I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke”, as it was so renowned as one of the best all-time slogan that served as the key factor in the success of the equally famous Hilltop ad campaign by Coca-Cola Company.

The ad campaign was regarded as one of the most inspiring TV commercials and was also highlighted in the 50 Years of Coca-Cola’s Television Advertisements. The advertisement featured a group of children from different corners of the world, dressed in ethnic costumes, standing on a hilltop in Italy and sang:

I’d like to buy the world a home and furnish it with love,

Grow apple trees and honey bees, and snow white turtle doves.

I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony,

I’d like to buy the world a Coke and keep it company.

[Repeat the last two lines, and in the background:]

It’s the real thing, Coke is what the world wants today.

The song was then edited into “True Love and Apple Pie” which was released on the New Seekers album We’d Like To Teach The World To Sing. The ad jingle then turned into a popular folk song which none of the American didn’t know how to sing.

This is how you reach worldwide audience, brilliant isn’t it? Don’t be intimidated by how great McDonald’s is. It’s possible for you to promote your new fast food company to the global food lovers in short span by using a tagline that says,”I’d like to buy the world some food” and then record it in an album entitled “We’d Like To Teach The World To Eat”. Wish you all success in replacing McDonald’s as the greatest food chain or take away the title of world’s no.1 coffee brand from Starbucks. It will then be I’d like to buy the world a coffee.

3 Reasons Why I Love Coca-Cola

May be there are more than three, but I am allowed to write only three so I will pick the top ones to write here.

The irreplaceable tastes. No other soda pop could replace Coke as my first choice. The taste cells on my tongue are really choosy when it comes to soft drinks(Though the fact is that I couldn’t really tell the difference between Pepsi and Coke.) It really open up my appetite and make all the food taste much more delicious. All in all, I am really so addicted with the “super-tonic” taste of Coke. Coca-Cola … makes good things taste better(1956 slogan). Yeah, I am so addicted.

Cool Image. I got to admit that I am a little superficial here. May be because of the global image of Coca-Cola,(as you know they sponsored 2008 Beijing Olympic Torch Run and others) I feel myself especially cool when a bottle of coke is on hand. You see! Even my prince of charm Christiano Ronaldo drinks coke!

Santa Claus! I know this one might at first sound a little idiosyncratic to you but how Coca-Cola Company has successfully reinvented the modern image of Santa Claus as an old man in red-and-white suit really impressed me. After all, Santa has been my best friend giving me all the sweet memories and dreams during X’mas day.
